GMC History

GMC boasts a long history of designing, engineering, and building some of the world's most well-respected trucks and SUVs. GMC's humble roots date back to 1901, when Max Grabowski established Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and developed some of the earliest commercial trucks ever designed. By 1909, General Motors purchased Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and merged it with Reliance Motor Car Company (also bought by GM around the same time).

The result was "GMC Truck," a division of GM. The OEM would not drop the "Truck" designation until 1996, when it officially became known as GMC . In 1912, GMC created its first mass-produced truck, selling 22,000 units. The brand grew quickly under GM's guidance, and became a major contributor to the US military during WWII, producing more than 600,000 capable and reliable trucks.

GMC and sister company Chevrolet offer strikingly similar vehicles. The seeds of this collaboration date all the way back to the 1920s, when the two brands began to share underpinnings and overall vehicle designs, offering different nameplates and grilles. Chevrolet trucks were generally marketed toward individuals, while GMC trucks were marketed toward commercial use. Today, the brands are further differentiated through the dealerships they can be bought at. GMC vehicles can be purchased at Buick and Cadillac dealerships, which Chevrolet vehicles are exclusively sold at Chevrolet dealerships.

GMC offers a versatile lineup of pickups, commercial trucks, buses, vans, military vehicles, crossovers, and SUVs for both commercial and personal use. From basic, no-frills work trucks to the luxurious Denali lineup, GMC offers something for everyone. Precision construction, powerful performance, and advanced technology remain at the forefront of GMC's standards.
